Friday, February 5th, the 3rd Annual Healdsburg Wild Steelhead Festival kicked off with the Steelhead Gala Dinner held at Hotel Healdsburg, featuring fine wines and dinner of sustainable, farmed Steelhead prepared by Charlie Palmers' Dry Creek Kitchen. Special Guest Speaker this year was Jim Lichatowich, author of 'Salmon without Rivers'. Jim, a fisheries scientist for 30 years, is a learned and persuasive advocate for wild salmon. Jim's other works include the landmark article in Trout magazine, "Pacific Salmon at the Crossroads" which predicted the issues we are faced with today with our Pacific salmon and steelhead fisheries.
Jim also contributed to the Trout Unlimited special report, "A Blueprint for Hatchery Reform" and has been one of the West Coast's leading advocates for watershed and habitat restoration to bring back our wild populations of salmon and steelhead. on a sustainable basis.
Jim's presentation was mesmerizing in its evolutionary sweep of Pacific Salmon history and the landscapes that have supported this magnificent species through the centuries.
Saturday, February 6th, was the date for main event in the Plaza in Downtown Healdsburg, from 10am-4pm. This fun day under the tents had educational exhibits, a free trout pond for the young angler's to try their luck, a fly fishing demonstration pond with tips from the pros, fishing gear and boats, art for kids, cooking demos by local chefs at 12 noon, 1:15 and 2:30. There was also a live steelhead display where you could see these beautiful fish swim around. There was fun music from the Rose Town Ramblers, and wine tasting from Quivira, Steelhead Wines, Truett-Hurst Vineyards, Merriam Vineyards, Michel Schlumberger Vineyards, Camellia Cellars and Simi Winery. Tasty treats from Chef Mateo Granados, Dry Creek Kitchen, Costeaux French Bakery, Vintage Valley Catering and Love Farms were all available for purchase.
Sunday, February 7th, there were fish- themed cooking classes at the acclaimed Relish Culinary Center in Healdsburg. Or you could have booked a fishing trip to those secret spots with experienced guides. Family activities, art for kids, fish sorting, food, music and more took place from 10 -3pm at the Lake Sonoma Fish Hatchery.
